Pretty fly for an unpainted guy?

Pretty fly for an unpainted guy?

While working on my low-budget 1850 pts. Chaos Space Marine army (one big Favoured of Chaos formation + two Cyclopia Cabal formations) I needed a Daemon Prince of Nurgle – but it had to be both cheap and of course not looking cheap. My bitzbox was extremely helpful (as always) and provided a head + wings from my Plague Drone conversions as well as leftover Helbrute legs from my Dark Castellax. Arms and torso front were acquired during a 50% bitzsale nearly for free.

The groin had to be removed in order to get the Helbrute legs closer together and then all plastic parts except the wings were glued together to get the pose and general shape right. Afterwards I closed the back with some cardboard and started to sculpt the back with milliput, dry-fitting the wings several times during the process. Now the model only needs some boils and minor details / cleanup with green stuff before it gets its shoulder pads.

Working time aside, the Daemon Prince came at price of 2,50€ for the parts from bitsbay.it and about 7,50€ for parts from earlier projects. And 10€ for a nice and individual Daemon Prince definitely fits into “low-budget”. 😀

Bigger artillery

Bigger artillery

Reading a lot of advices, tactics, army lists and tournament reports in the Renegades’ facebook group, I now need some ordnance batteries in my list. Earthshaker cannons for 55 points are indeed intriguing. 😀

But to get some uniformity with my daemonic field artillery, the cannons need to be living as well. After some time on Google I found a suiting (and inexpensive) base model – Ramshackle Games’ Slag Dragon – Maggot.

At only £5.00 the maggot is big enough to get a huge barrel and respective base working. Reviews state that Ramshackle’s casts are sometimes not that good, but for Nurgle even a warpcast specimen would work. What’s your opinion on the model? Any good or should I search for another? Or do you have some cool looking models at hand? 🙂

No tyranny without a tyrant

No tyranny without a tyrant

Whilst the additional field artillery guns wait for new material, my ordnance tyrant has made some progress. I used the Herald of Nurgle as base with a new foot, some green stuff trousers and a head from the Putrid Blightkings kit. The green stuff was obviously a bit too old for a smooth surface, but nothing that can’t be solved with a dremel and some sanding. Still missing are his gun, the back pack and some cables. The back pack is already finished, but I haven’t sorted out which gun I should give him. Ruleswise an autogun is probably best, but a regular autogun looks ridiculously small in the herald’s hands. My current take is a trimmed-down machine gun from the Dark Vengeance cultists.

More Thudd Guns – or not

More Thudd Guns – or not

After realising that only the thudd gun’s split face was buggering me, I removed it with some khornate force and began to work on the barrels with my dremel. The sculpting had to wait as I forgot all my sculpting materials at my shared flat near university. So I took out the second gun’s prepared barrels and built another daemonic quad launcher, this time with a higher firing arc due to the plague drone’s donor body. With four more drone sprues another gun body came into being – just to find out that I also forgot the aluminium pipe as I wanted to saw off more barrels…

So my artillery currently consists of only two nearly done guns and an unfinished one until I get back to my place of study.

Ordnance Tyranny

Ordnance Tyranny

While I got distracted with a lot new side projects, I took a closer look at Imperial Armour 13 and the updated Siege of Vraks, which suggested that another 1000 points army is indeed a good idea.^^

So my gaze fell upon a nurglish artillery regiment, which is on the farther end of infestation with lots of plague zombies, half demonic leaders and more artillery than needed.

From a list-building point of view this made some choices mandatory: A “The Purge” detachment with an ordnance tyrant, two blobs of plague zombies and enough thudd guns to cover the battlefield with 64 small blast templates. Overkill? What else? 😉

Now I’ve seen a whole bunch of traitor guards and renegades based on cadians and while this is totally fine, I didn’t like the look as they are so often way to clean and uniform for my idea of renegades. Thus I rounded up as many Dark Vengeance cultists as I could find and added two Boxes of Start Collecting! Nurgle Daemons as well as one box of Mantic zombies.

The plague zombie units will contain mostly the models from Mantic, which are lovely and especially cheap, but also really flimsy compared to GW’s heroic scale. So I mixed some zombie brutes into the units to give them an uneven appearance. And that’s how those 20 plaguebearers got a new purpose. 🙂

My daemon-engineered thudd guns started out as “slothy maggot-like things with mortar barrels and taser-wielding crew”. For this I did a quick mockup in Photoshop, using both plague drones as base for the gun and the notorious cultists for the crew.

The crew member satisfied my vision, but the gun did not. And when it came to building the damn thing, the plague drone kit didn’t approve either. As this is a serious kind of nearly proxy-like conversion, I needed to get the dimensions as close as possible to Forge World’s original to avoid any discussions – not possible at all with the above concept. After that the project lay fallow for some time as I couldn’t get my head around a new idea. Luckily, I came across a neat conversion on the Convertorum and the project got new wind. The result is this… thing:

Green Stuff and Milliput for details like boils or damage on the shiny aluminium barrels as well as filling some gaps are still missing, but I’m currently at odds with the overall design. And before I convert another 15 plague drones, I should be sold on the design. What do you think about the conversion? Any suggestions or encouragement? 😀
